Face Card:

A jack, queen, or king. These are also called count cards, court cards, paint cards, and picture cards.

Faced:

(1) A face-up card. (2) To receive a face card.

Fall of the Cards:

The order in which the cards are dealt.

False Cut:

A cheater’s cut, where the stacked portion of the deck remains intact on the top of the deck.

False Openers:

A hand that has been opened improperly.

False Riffle:

A cheater’s riffle, used to keep stacked cards undisturbed after riffling.

False Shuffle:

See Blind Shuffle.

Family Pot:

A pot in which all (or almost all) of the players enter the pot.

Farm System:

Several poker games under the control of a good player.

Fast:

As in to “play fast”. To play a hand aggressively, betting and raising as much as possible.

Fast Company:

Seasoned poker veterans who know what is going on in the gambling world. The opposite of a george.

Fast Game:

A game with a fast betting pace.

Fatten:

To increase the money in the pot. This is also known as “sweetening” the pot.

Favorite:

The hand that is expected, or “favored”, to win most often in a particular situation.

Feeble Phoebe:

Similar to Hollywood, except table cards are turned over two at a time and played for high and low.

Feed the Pot:

To make a foolish bet or raise.

Feeler Bet:

A small or nominal bet made in an effort to seek out the strength and/or raising tendencies of one’s opponents.

Felt:

The surface of most poker tables. A player who is running low on chips is said to be “down to the felt”.

Fever:

A five.

Fifth Street:

The fifth card dealt. In Seven-Card Stud, the third round of betting follows the distribution of this card and, in Texas Hold’em, it is followed by the fourth round of betting. In Texas Hold’em, this is also called the “river” and is the last community card dealt.

Fill:

To draw a card that makes a five-card hand (straight, flush, full house, straight flush).

Fin:

Five dollars.

Finger Poker:

A game run on credit.

Finger Up Your Spine:

An indication that you have been recognized as a cheater and had better leave.

Finky Dink:

Eight-five (85).

Finn Poker:

To play poker with the objective of winning the maximum amount of money.

First Hand:

The first player allowed to bet a hand.

First Jack Deals:

A method to determine who has the first deal.

Fish:

A poor player, also known as a duffer.

Fish Hook:

(1) A seven or a jack. (2) A nickname for a jacks, more often heard in the plural.

Fishing:

A player who stays in a game for longer than is advisable is generally “fishing” for the card(s) that will make their hand a winner.

Five and Dime:

A hand containing a five and a ten with three un-paired cards in between.

Five-Card Draw:

Possibly the world?s most well-known poker game.

Five-Card Stud:

Stud poker played with one hole card and four exposed cards.

Five-of-a-Kind:

Five cards of the same value.

Fix:

(1)To prearrange the cards. (2) To stack the deck.

Fixed Limit:

Bets that can only be made in specified increments.

Flash:

(1) To expose concealed cards. (2) To turn up a common card for everyone’s use when insufficient cards are available to complete a Stud game. (3) Five cards, one of each suit plus the joker.

Flat Call:

As opposed to calling, “flat calling” emphasises the fact that you did not raise.

Flat Limit:

A game in which only one consistent amount is permitted for all bets and raises.

Flat Poker:

Poker with a blind open.

Flicker Flicker:

Five-Card High-Low Stud.

Flinger:

A wild or crazy player.

Flip Stud:

Five-Card Stud in which the optional hole card and matching hole cards are wild.

Floorman:

(1) A cardroom manager. (2) A shift boss in a casino.

Flop:

A number of games, such as Texas Hold’em and Omaha, are played with five community cards. The first three are dealt at the same time, face-up, and are called the “flop”. Games with a flop are sometimes called flop games.

Flush:

When all five cards in your hand have a common suit, you have a “flush”. The flush with the highest card not in common is more advantageous, so, for example, AQT53 of spades is a better flush than AQT52 of diamonds. A flush ranks between a straight and a full house.

Fluss (Flux):

A flush.

Foiling the Cut:

A cheater’s method of returning cards to their original position after a cut.

Fold:

To abandon your hand, usually because another player has made a larger bet than you are willing to call. You are unable to win the pot but at least you do not lose more money.

Football:

A Stud game similar to Baseball, where sixes and threes are wild cards.

Force-In:

A mandatory blind bet, usually with the option to raise.

Forced Bet:

A blind bet or a bring-in.

Foul:

A hand which cannot be played for one reason or another. A player with a “foul hand” may not make any claims to any portion of the pot. For example, “he ended up with three cards after the flop, so the dealer declared his hand foul.”

Foul Hand:

A hand consisting of the wrong number of cards.

Four Flush:

A hand with four cards of the same suit.

Four Forty Four:

Eight-Card Stud with fours as wild.

Four-Flusher:

A cheater who tries to win pots by purposely miscalling his hand.

Four-of-a-kind:

Four cards of the same rank, also known as quads.

Fourth Street:

The fourth card dealt in a hand of Stud poker. In Seven-Card Stud, the second round of betting is called “fourth street” because players have four cards. In Texas Holdem poker, “fourth street” is the fourth card on board and the third round of betting.

Fox:

An expert player.

Freak:

A joker or a wild card.

Freak Hands:

Non-standard poker hands such as a Blazer, a Dutch Straight, Kilters, and Skeets.

Free Card:

To see the next card without having to call a bet, for example, if everyone checks.

Free Ride:

To play without paying.

Free Roll:

(1) A situation in which one player has a shot at winning the entire pot when they are tied with another player, who cannot. For instance, you have Ac-Kc and your opponent has Ad-Kh. The flop is Ks-5c-Tc. You are tied with your opponent right now, but are “free rolling”, because you can win the whole pot and your opponent cannot. If no club comes, you split the pot. If it comes, you win the whole pot. (2) Tournaments with no buy-in but still contain prizes of some sort, are called “freerolls”.

Free Wheeler:

A bankrupt player who is allowed to play for free until he wins a pot.

Freeze-Out:

Any tournament format in which you cannot re-buy.

Freezer:

A call for less than the amount of the bet in a game played with table stakes. This is also known as short call.

Friend:

A card that improves a hand.

Full House:

A strong hand that ranks between a flush and a four-of-a-kind. It consists of three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank. For example, KKK77 is called “kings full of sevens”, often abbreviated to “kings full”. It can also be referred to as Boat, Full Barn, and Full Tub.

Fundamental Position:

The value of a player’s hand relative to the other players’ hands.

Fuzzing:

Mixing the cards by continuously stripping off the top and bottom cards. This is also called milking or snowing cards.
