Jack and Back:

”Jackpot” poker that reverts to Lowball if no one opens. This type of poker is also called Jack and Reverse, Jacks Back, and Jackson.

Jack Benny:

Three-nine (39).

Jack Up:

To raise.

Jackpot:

A special bonus paid to the loser of a hand if his very good hand was beaten. In Hold’em, the “loser” must typically get aces full or better beaten. In some of the larger southern California card clubs, the “jackpots” have reached over $50,000. It is, of course, funded with money removed from the game as part of the rake.

Jacks to Open:

Draw poker in which jacks or better are required to open.

Jam:

A hand in which several players are raising each other.

Jesse James:

Four-five (45).

Jinx:

A curse of bad luck.

Joe Bernstein:

Six-nine (69).

Jog:

An unevenly stacked deck used by a collusion cheater to mark where his partner should cut the deck. This is also referred to as a “step”.

John, Jake, J-Boy:

A jack.

Johnny Moss:

Ace-ten (AT).

Joker:

The 53rd card in a deck, sometimes used as a wild card. A card that can be designated as whatever suit and rank the possessor wishes. Also see Bug.

Joker Poker:

Poker played with the joker as wild.

Jonah:

An unlucky player.
